The relatives of those killed in the November 2008 terror attacks expressed relief over the execution of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman, who was hanged by the Indian authorities Wednesday morning in Yerwada jail. Justice has finally been delivered, many said.
Ragini Sharma, the widow of S. K. Sharma, a railway ticket collector: She expressed gratitude to the president and said, though it was delayed, but “we did get justice,” according to Samay Live, a television news station.
“I am happy that it was done secretly, otherwise some human rights people would have opposed it,” said Ms. Sharma, who lost her husband in the terror attacks.
K. Unnikrishnan, father of a National Security Guard commando, Maj. Sandeep Unnikrishnan: “I would like to tell the terrorists that if you want to achieve something do it in a mature manner, not by killing innocent people,” he told NDTV, a news television station.
“I don’t think killing Kasab brings any closure,” said Mr. Unnikrishnan, whose son died fighting terrorists at the Taj hotel in Mumbai. “Sandeep served in the N.S.G. Killing a person was not their aim; the more important thing is protecting people. But I appreciate the manner in which the execution was carried out. This is only the closure of one chapter, many other chapters still remain open,” he said.
Smita Salaskar, widow of Vijay Salaskar, senior police inspector for the Mumbai police: “Though the execution was delayed, Kasab was finally hanged,” she said, according to a PTI report cited on the FirstPost Web site.
“With this hanging, homage has been paid to my husband,” said Mrs. Salaskar, whose husband died during the attacks. “But the real homage will be the conviction of other accused shielded in Pakistan.”
Eknath Omble, the brother of another victim, an assistant subinspector of the Mumbai police, Tukaram Omble: “My family is happy,” he said, according to IBN Live Web site. “I am glad that today the president and the home minister took the right decision.”
“A terrorist like Kasab should have been hanged in public,” Mr. Omble said.
